In this post, Ben will take you through how to use the Aux Busses on the Audio Mixer in the TV Gallery. There is a training video below, or you can use the step-by-step guide.

Step-by-step guide

1. Before we start, an Aux Bus is a separate audio output from a mixing desk, which contains one channel, or a selection of channels, to a different output device than the main audio output. We use Aux Busses to send audio to presenter earpieces in the studio, and to our offsite LiveU field units.

1. An Aux Bus is

2. The Aux Busses we have set up are labelled on the top right of the mixer, below the screen. Studio TB is talkback for the studio presenters, and LiveU1 and LiveU2 are for the two offsite presenters.

2. Aux Busses are labelled on the top right

3. Push the Bus-18 Button in the middle of the console to be able to select the mix busses. The first four faders on the right will move automatically.

3. Push the bus 1-8 button to select aux faders

4. The first four faders on the right will show you the level of volume being sent out on the Aux Busses. These 4 faders should be set to 0

5. Push the sends on fader button to see outputs

6. Push the select button at the top of each fader to see which of the input faders are turned up for that aux bus. The faders on the left will move up and down by themselves. You can use these faders to control the volume of an input being sent out on an Aux Bus.

6. Push the select button to see what faders are on which bus
7. Faders will jump to show audio levels

7. Push channel 9-16 button for additional faders. Please note that the VT and Radio Studio Inputs will move to faders 1 and 2 on the left hand side.

8. Push channel 9-16 button for additional faders
9. VT audio moves to faders 1 and 2 on the right

Top Tip- Ensure that you do not sent an input back out to the talkback in the same location, e.g. do not sent presenters 1 and 2 out to the Studio, LiveU 1 to LiveU 1, etc.

10. Ensure you do not send the audio from one mic to the same talkback

The only time you would need to do this is if one of the presenters says that they can’t hear something, or if they can but the volume is too quiet.

8. To return to normal mode, push the Chan 1-8 and 9-16 buttons at the same time, and then push the sends on fader button again so it is not illuminated.
